Find Out How to Get Shiny Hair with LYL Experts

Do you want shiny, glossy hair?

Shiny hair usually equals healthy hair, which is something most people are after. However, few have the time or professional knowledge on how to achieve and maintain hair that’s consistently shiny, smooth, and soft to the touch.

If you’re looking for some quick ways to achieve enviably shining hair, our experts share how to get shiny, luminous locks.

“Damage is the number one cause of dull hair,” says Kerrie Humphrys, a hairstylist. “When strands get damaged, particularly from heat or harsh chemicals, they begin to break and won’t reflect light properly. The most important thing for shiny hair is that the hair cuticle is closed and smooth so it can reflect the light.”

But don’t just lust after lustrous hair. We tapped a handful of hairstylists to share some hacks for closing those cuticles and bouncing the light to the next megawatt level, both immediately and over time.

1. Use a nourishing shampoo and conditioner: Look for products that contain natural oils like argan oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil that can help add shine to your hair. If hair is fine use a leave-in conditioner over heavy in-shower conditioners

2. Rinse with cold water: After shampooing and conditioning, finish with a cold water rinse. The cold water will help to seal the hair cuticle, making it easier for light to reflect off your hair, creating shine.

3. Use a hair oil or serum: Apply a small amount of hair oil or serum to the ends of your hair to add shine and prevent flyaways.

4. Avoid over-styling: Over-styling your hair with heat tools can cause damage and lead to dull-looking hair. Try to let your hair air-dry whenever possible and limit your use of heat styling tools.

5. Use a weekly hair mask: A weekly hair mask can help to nourish and hydrate your hair, leaving it shiny and healthy-looking. Look for a mask that contains ingredients like shea butter, honey, or olive oil.

6. Avoid over-brushing: Brushing your hair too much can lead to breakage and damage. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle your hair and minimise damage.

7. Eat a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet full of nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, can help promote healthy hair growth and shine.

8. Switch to a Silk Pillowcase:  Some fabrics, such as cotton, are extremely absorbent and will pull moisture from your hair, and will therefore dry it out and reduce its shine. Silk causes less friction to your hair so sleeping on one will leave it looking smoother and healthier come morning.

Recap:

You must begin with your hair care regimen if you want your strands to appear as glossy as clear glass. Try to keep chemical and heat styling to a minimum. Include nourishing items like leave-in conditioner, ACV rinses, and hair masks. Use a boar-bristle brush, always use a satin or silk pillowcase, and make sure your body gets enough good fats.
