A Day in the Life of a Hairdresser: What to Expect

As a hairdresser, your days are filled with creativity, attention to detail, and a sense of satisfaction that comes from making people look and feel their best. But have you ever wondered what a typical day looks like for a hairdresser? Let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at the daily routine of a hairstylist and what it takes to keep those locks looking luscious.

Morning Prep

The day starts early for most hairdressers, around 7-8 am. They arrive at the salon, fresh and ready to tackle the day. The first order of business is to prep for the morning rush. This includes:

1️⃣ Prepping stations: Setting up tools, shampoo, conditioners, and other essentials at each station

2️⃣ Restocking supplies: Ensuring there’s enough product on hand, from hairspray to hair dye

3️⃣ Pre-booking appointments: Reviewing the schedule for the day and making sure everything is organised

Client Time

Once the prep work is done, it’s time to get down to business. Hairdressers typically start seeing clients around 9 am. Each appointment is unique, with its own set of needs and challenges. A typical day might include:

1️⃣ Cutting and colouring: Cutting, colouring, and styling hair to meet clients’ requests

2️⃣ Consultations: Discussing styles, products, and techniques with clients to ensure they’re happy with their look

3️⃣  Making adjustments: Tweaking styles until they’re just right

Lunch Break

After a busy morning of back-to-back appointments, it’s time for lunch! Hairdressers usually take a break around 12:30 pm to refuel and recharge. This is also a great time to catch up on social media or scroll through industry magazines for inspiration.

Afternoon Rush

The afternoon is often just as busy as the morning. Hairdressers may have more appointments lined up or need to finish any unfinished work from earlier in the day. This might include:

1️⃣ Finishing touches: Adding finishing touches to styles, such as styling products or hairspray

2️⃣ Specialised services: Offering services like extensions, perms, or Brazilian blowouts

3️⃣ Product knowledge: Sharing knowledge about products with clients and making recommendations

Wrap-Up

As the day winds down around 5-6 pm, hairdressers start wrapping up any remaining work. This includes:

1️⃣ Cleaning up stations: Sanitising tools and equipment after each use

2️⃣ Updating records: Keeping accurate records of services performed and products used

3️⃣ Preparing for tomorrow: Restocking supplies and prepping for the next day’s appointments

The Joys of Being a Hairdresser

While being a hairdresser can be demanding, it’s also incredibly rewarding. Seeing clients leave the salon feeling confident and beautiful is the best reward. Hairdressers have the opportunity to:

1️⃣ Build relationships: Developing strong bonds with clients and watching them grow

2️⃣ Stay creative: Constantly learning new techniques and staying up-to-date on trends

3️⃣ Make a difference: Helping people feel more confident and beautiful

In conclusion, being a hairdresser is a challenging yet fulfilling career. From morning prep to evening wrap-up, every day is filled with excitement, creativity, and connection with clients. Whether you’re just starting out or already an experienced hairstylist, there’s always something new to learn and look forward to in this dynamic profession.

If you’re interested in pursuing a career as a hairdresser, remember to stay passionate about your work, continually educate yourself on new techniques and products, and always put your best foot forward for your clients!
