How To Avoid Dry Hair This Winter

As winter approaches, so does the joys of brittle, dry, static-ridden hair. From hat hair to split ends, winter seems to have the power to turn bad hair days into an entire bad hair season.

As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, those freezing temperatures/cold weather can really have a bad effect on our hair.

Winter can be a bummer to our hair, More often than not, the exposure to the harsh cold elements and constant transition to heated indoors can zap our hair of its moisture, leading to dull hair that’s more susceptible to damage. So, how do you take care of your hair, minimise these harsh winter effects and prevent damage? Here are a few winter hair care tips we put together below so you can achieve healthy hair this winter.

Wash Less

It’s time to make a change to your winter hair care routine.Over washing your hair will strip it of its natural oils that keep the hair moisturised and protected, which are more important than ever during the colder months. Less shampoo means more moisture. If you’re vulnerable to an itchy, dry scalp during the winter, try cleansing less often. You can use dry shampoo if your hair needs a lift in between washes.

Deep Conditioner (Hair Mask)

Hair masks can help revive and nourish your hair during dry winters, leaving your locks looking healthy and shiny. If you find that your hair is still too dry during the winter even with weekly treatments, you may want to go the extra mile and hydrate your hair overnight with a hair oil or serum.

Leave-In Conditioner

A key sign that your hair is suffering from winter dryness is those fine strands of hair lifting from the head, are a common occurrence during winter. To avoid a static party on your head, a simple tip for dry hair is to be sure hair is hydrated with regular conditioning, then lock it in with a leave-in conditioner.

Clear Gloss

If your hair is looking as drab as the weather, a clear gloss will add instant shine, and seal in moisture in the cuticle of your hair.

Wear a hat

It is important to cover your hair during the winter months to shield it from the moisture-robbing dry air, snow, wind, and rain. This is not the time to worry about dreaded hat hair. The elements dry your hair out, making it more prone to breakage.

Wool, cotton, and other fabrics can cause breakage as well, so make sure to line your hat with silk or satin to help prevent damage. Fight static electricity under your hat by using a dry oil spray. Dry oils are weightless and contain natural oils that moisturise hair, bringing back its shine.

Use Less heat

Heat styling is a major culprit for dry, damaged hair. Curling irons, hair dryers and other styling products can lead to split ends, breakage and dryness during the winter. Instead opt to air dry hair whenever possible, using a few drops of hair oil to tame frizz.  Letting your hair dry naturally will be more beneficial to you in the long run. Always use heat protection products if you are going to use any kind of heat tool, including curlers and straighteners.

Dry your hair before rushing out the door

Ladies love that wash and go, Although this may be a regular habit for you in the warmer months, it is especially important to ensure that your hair is fully dry before rushing out the door in the winter. Wet hair is more vulnerable to damage than dry hair. Walking outside in winter with a wet head can cause hair to freeze and break. While air drying is best, it’s better to blow dry your hair than go outdoors with a saturated mane.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water helps energise and encourage hair growth from root to tip. It also stimulates a healthier scalp, preventing scalp problems like dryness, itchiness, or dandruff during the winter.

Regular trims

you may find that more split ends are emerging during winter, due to the dryness and brittleness of the hair. The only way to get rid of split ends is to trim them off. The frequency of trims depends on the growth rate of your hair, if your hair grows pretty fast, then every 6 weeks is good.

Keep these tips in mind and you’ll be saying goodbye to winter hair woes and hello to gorgeous strands all year long.
